ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The cost of health insurance for University of New Mexico student could increase as much as 30 percent next school year as the national health care overhaul is causing a rise in premiums in most student insurance plans around the country.
The Albuquerque Journal reports (http://bit.ly/KDsTfE) that the increase in cost at UNM hasn’t been set because the school hasn’t yet selected a vendor for its health insurance plan.
But UNM [...] Continue Reading…

When local health care officials talk about the state of their industry, they say a perfect storm is brewing.
Kevin Poorten, president and CEO of KishHealth System, and Michael Flora, executive director of the Ben Gordon Center, said providers work together to ensure people who need care get it, even as demand increases.
At the same time, providers are in the midst of what Poorten calls an unprecedented shift in how health care is delivered in the U.S. on the backdrop of financial [...] Continue Reading…

Health reform is good for businessNews from Philadelphia Inquirer:
by Robert Field, J.D., M.P.H., Ph.D.
Big business could be the biggest loser if the Supreme Court overturns Obamacare. To be more precise, one business in particular faces an enormous risk – the insurance industry.

Looked at another way, the loss represents about one-half [...] Continue Reading…

Health care losing to politicsNews from Philadelphia Inquirer:
Burnishing his political credentials among the Republican right wing may be the only logical explanation for Gov. Christie’s blocking the creation of state health-insurance exchanges, which would aid not only the 1.3 million New Jerseyans without coverage, but also small businesses and people who don’t have enough medical insurance.
Choosing politics over policy, Christie has caved to party extremists who were calling the exchanges “Christiecare.”
The term served as a loosely veiled threat to a potential running mate for presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt [...] Continue Reading…

Is world outpacing US on health care?News from Washington Post:
Even as Americans debate whether President Obama’s health-care law and its promise of guaranteed health coverage should be scrapped, many far less affluent nations are moving in the opposite direction — to provide medical insurance to all citizens.
China, after years of underfunding health care, is on track to complete a three-year, $ 124 billion initiative projected to cover more than 90 percent of the nation’s residents.
